Massive Rally for Earth Day
Around 300 000 people gathered in Montreal for the annual Earth day rally. Although the main focus was the protection of environment, several demonstrators took aim at Quebec’s prime minister Jean Charest and showed support to the students who are currently on strike against the rise of tuition fees.

Quebec Student Strike: Chaos in Downtown as Premier meets with business leaders, jokes about protests while dozens fall injured outside
The Salon du Plan Nord, a convention aimed at linking government and business leaders to drive private investment in the North of Quebec’s resource markets, got off to a rocky start today. Student, environmental and union groups joined in mass protest at the convention centre in downtown Montreal. At one point students were able to force their way into the convention centre, prompting police to call for reinforcements in a panic. Students were protesting the government’s blatant pandering to the private sector yet complete abandonment of their responsibilities to the students. News networks showed footage of a student being shot directly at close range with a smoke projectile by anti-riot police.
After the meeting finally got under way, Premier Jean Charest joked with leaders that “the event was popular,” and that “we can offer [the students] jobs, as far north as possible.” This came as dozens of his constituents in the street were injured by police, and tear gas was widely used in an attempt to clear protesters from outside the convention centre. The remarks were widely panned on social networks, and appeared to fall as yet another publicity failure for the ailing Liberal government.
